I’m currently working on my dissertation and struggling a bit with the literature review section. After researching and trying various methods, I’ve gathered a few tips that really helped me write a more structured and comprehensive review—and I thought it might help others here too!
Start Broad, Then Narrow Down: Begin with general theories and gradually focus on studies directly related to your research question. This gives context and shows you understand the bigger picture.
Group Research Thematically: Instead of summarizing one study after another, organize your literature by themes or debates. This makes your writing more engaging and analytical.
Evaluate, Don’t Just Describe: A strong lit review doesn’t just report what others said—it critically assesses their work. Identify gaps, limitations, and differing opinions.
Use Reliable Sources: Academic databases like JSTOR, PubMed, and Scopus are your best friends. Don’t rely heavily on non-peer-reviewed sources.
